Dhow Safari Tours Quirimbas

Dhow safari Tours Quirimbas are led by pro guides Harris Mupedzi and Dollar Karingiramambo. Both Harris and Dollar are highly competent, capable and knowledgeable guides who have been living and operating in the region for years, offering a passionate insight into the Quirimbas.

Harris Mupedzi

Known as the serious type with a quiet sense of humor, Harris was born on 10 October 1970. His career started in 1992 when he started guiding boat cruises and fishing trips with Fothergill Island, Kariba, Zimbabwe. In 1996 he partook in a specialist training program for guides with Zimbabwe Sun Safaris. His training covered birding, tree identification, animal life history and tracking of wild animals.

After 3 years of training he attained his full guides license and became a professional guide. Harris then freelanced as a pro guide choosing established companies that would develop the different avenues of his guiding profile. In 2006 he became a member of the Ibo Island Lodge team. Harris has helped us develop our  bird lists and safaris, our mangroves and our flora and fauna.

Harris pioneered the mobile sea kayak safaris hopping from island to island, his longest under paddle being from Ibo Island to Mufumvu, then Mufumvu north to Mogundula Island.

Dollar Karingiramambo

In 1991 Dollar joined the Harmony Partnership as a deckhand. Determined to work his way up, he attained his Launch masters certificate and was promoted to sea captain. In 1996 he achieved his guiding license after spending 3 years studying conservation and nature. He then joined Shearwater Safaris Kariba Branch as a pro river guide, operating canoe trails from Kariba to Kanyemba through the world renowned Mana Pools National Park. These trips were generally ten days of paddling under mobile fly camps.

In 2006 he joined Ibo Island Lodge. He holds the position as senior guide for kayaking both in open ocean waters and also into the river and mangrove swamps that surround the Quirimbas.  Dollar is also the head guide for both our one-day dhow excursions and the mobile dhow safaris involving eco camps from uninhabited island to island.

Dollar was also the head guide to famous South African sea paddler and adventurer Peter Van Kets. Paddling south all the way from Vamizi Island to Pemba in their Quirimbas expedition September 2008.

Both Harris and Dollar are professional guides, phenomenal kayak instructors, and possess an intimate knowledge of the Quirimbas National Park and surrounds.
